But what I had seen from it I really enjoyed, and I planned to see it all the way through at some point. This weekend I finally bumped it to the top of my Netflix Queue, and sat down with it to watch. Incase you didn’t know Ed Wood was a infamous(although maybe not at the time) B-Movie director, who directed such cult classics as, Glen or Glenda, Bride of the Monster, and of course, Plan 9 from Outer Space.

I fell in love with Tim Burton’s Ed Wood within the first five minutes of the movie. Johnny Depp is absolutely incredible as Wood, he brings a energy to the character that just makes you root for him all the way through. There are some really heartfelt moments in the movie that brought me to the verge of tears, these usually happened between Wood and Bela Lugosi portrayed by Martin Landau. I must say, I see it as a huge feet that Burton was able to bring out such an emotional response in me only from this campy cult oddity. It’s probably because I identify with Wood, because I’m just as passionate about film as he was. I broke into tears of joy during the montage of Wood making Plan 9, I was just so proud for the guy. I loved Ed Wood and I definitely recommend you go and see it right now.

Sherbet Underground Productions

Go to my new production blog and read updates about my new short film Zomba and other film projects in the future.

Sherbet Underground Productions

Nugent Smoothie Podcast #2

<img style="display:block; According to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter Michel Gondry is on the verge of becoming the director of Seth Rogen's "The Green Hornet". This makes me way more excited than the old Stephen Chow news. I loved Be Kind Rewind and I can't wait to see what abstract hilarity is going to bring to the project with Seth Rogen in tow. This movie is now very anticipated for me.

Nugent Smoothie Podcast #1

In my first Nugent Smoothie podcast I talk about Coraline and Pirated Oscar Screeners. Tonight I watched one of the most debated nominees, Frost/Nixon, and I really enjoyed it. One thing I didn't expect from the movie was a sort of mockumentary format throughout the film, there are various interviews with characters that are used to move along the plot, and while some people may see that as a weakness, I really enjoyed it. There was also alot of humor throughout that I enjoyed because I expected it to be alot more serious. The end of the movie is awesome and powerful as well. Frank Langella was also very good as Nixon, like Josh Brolin in last years W., he did more than an impersonation, and showed off the human element in the man. Overall, even though it may not deserve Best Picture, I really liked Frost/Nixon and I highly recommend it.

Just Another Fanboy

Funny People Trailer

The first trailer for Judd Apatow's Funny People has finally arrived, and in my opinion, it's looking great. Adam Sandler plays George Simmons, a comedian who finds out he is dying, and while Sandler looks alright in this movie, it's Seth Rogen who looks the best. I'm glad he's willing to step back into a smaller role, and is it just me or has he lost weight. Another actor who looks awesome in this is Jason Schwartzman who i'm a big fan of. Funny People premieres July 31st, check out the trailer below.

R.I.P Tori

Tori was the new puppy we got so my other dog Toby would have company. The only reason I was let down by it was because when I saw the original trailer it completely blew my mind, that plus the fact that David Gordon Green was involved, so I expected something amazing. But Pineapple Express was not what I was expecting. It really is more of a tribute to Comedies of the 80's like See No Evil, Hear No Evil. But nonetheless I still enjoyed it, especially the big action blow out at the end of the movie. One actor who I really enjoyed was Danny McBride, who has been in a lot of mainstream Apatow comedies lately, but is also a David Gordon Green protege. He co-stared in Green's early film All The Real Girls and plays Red in this. Even though Pineapple Express didn't completely meet my expectations, I still enjoyed it, and I recommend you go out and see it.

Observe and Report Trailer

I was very excited about this years Mall Cop movies, and so far Paul Blart dosen't look that great(although I still want to see it) but this one is a whole different story. I haven't been this excited about a movie since (ironically) Pineapple Express which also had an awesome trailer. It seems that Danny McBride's crew is taking over the Apatow genre of Comedy. McBride's first two movies were directed by David Gordon Green(Pineapple Express) and Jody Hill who is directing this and also directed The Foot Fist Way. Be forewarned the attached trailer is Red Band so don't go crying to me that you were offended.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Being sick, I had time to sit down and watch a movie, so I watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall. The movie centers around the lives of High School Students in a rural Indiana town, the Jock, the Princess, the Rebel, the Geek, and the Heartthrob. These people are of course used as stereotypes to give you a feel of what High School is like these days, and I, being in High School myself, feel that they did it. When I watch a fiction film about High School, modern or retro, I don't feel that they capture what it is really like, but this movie does it. I related the most to Hannah in film, I felt like she was almost the female version of myself, being interested in film and all. But I feel that everyone will find a person to relate to in these simple stereotypes of people, and thats one of the great things about this movie. The one thing that I didn't like about the movie was the animations which felt very budget, and it felt a little long in spots, but otherwise American Teen was very enjoyable for me, and I recommend it to you all.

Digital Video Dorks

I just wanted to announce a new project i'm pursuing with Josh Howard of the Pompcast called Digital Video Dorks. I enjoyed The Spirit merly as campy fun, And yes I did find it fun, especially with lines like “I’m gonna kill you all kinds of dead!” and “Lets Die!” spread throughout the film. The movie does have more talking than action but I did enjoy the action that there was if only because it was so ridiculous, I thought that last action scene was awesome (after all it did have the let’s die line, you could put that on a t-shirt). I liked the giant guns they were using, I laughed every time they pulled one out. People critisize the movie for having to much dialouge and exposition but I don’t see what’s wrong with that, no I didn’t retain much of that stuff after leaving the theater, other than the ridiculous but awesome catchphrases, but I felt that it was o.k because I found that the dialogue wasn’t that important. Plus it makes up for it with awesome visuals. The things I enjoyed the most were all the silly action scenes, the octopus pulling out 2 giant guns with 4 barrels on each and saying “I’m the Octopus, i’ve got 8 of everything.” The Spirit beating the Octopus in the water while ridiculous punching sound effects play. There is no question though that Miller is stealing the style not only from his own Sin City but from all things in the Graphic Novel medium, that shot when the Octopus blows up is taken right out of Watchmen. I dod enjoy The Spirit though, and remember, I’m not saying this was a masterpiece, and i’m not saying this was the best film of the year, I just really enjoyed it. I think The Spirit is destined to become a cult classic.

My Top 5 Movies of 2008

1. So i've tried and tried to get into it but every time I watch an episode of Flying Circus or pop in a Python movie I turn it off within 30 seconds and decide to do something else, not because i don't like it, but because I have a i'm pretty sure I have ADD. But last night I decided to force myself to sit through Monty Python's Meaning of Life, and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. I just love the structure of the film, it starts with a short and is then split into little segments, and I think thats genius. I was suprised at how dirty the film was, I had always considered Python to be clean, but it didn't stop me from enjoying it. My favorite segments were probably a tossup between Live Organ Transplants and Death. Monty Python's Meaning of Life has not made me an instant fanatic, but it has peaked my interest in Python, and I will deffinetly be diving deeper into their stuff very very soon.

CinemaSquad

Hello Internet, Drew here, and i'm here to share with you some wonderful and exciting news. I make short films all the time, my bedroom walls are covered with movie posters, and everyday I go to filmjunk.com. Film Junk is my favorite of the sea of movie blogs out there on the interwebs, it covers the best stories going on out there in Hollywood daily. It is run by Computer Science Graduate and Video Game Programmer Sean Dwyer with help from Film School Graduate and Amateur Filmmaker Jay Cheel and former Radio DJ Greg "The Gasman" Gaspari. ‚"I started a site back in 2001 called Space Junk, which would eventually become Film Junk." says Dwyer. "At the time, I really enjoyed print zines, and I wanted to create a place where some friends and I could post random reviews, articles, stories and artwork... basically an outlet for creativity. Publishing it online seemed like a lot less headache than photocopying a bunch of issues and mailing them to people. Eventually I started posting news stories on the site on a daily basis, and as blogging became more popular, it seemed like a natural format to adopt for the site." Sean also does a weekly podcast with Jay and Greg, the podcast covers movie news and reviews, and very funny disscusions between the trio. "Jay and I hosted a few different radio shows on our local university radio station, and one of those shows included movie reviews and other offbeat discussions." says Dwyer. "We eventually quit because the radio station wasn't reaching very many people, and there were too many restrictions being placed on us (ie. no swearing allowed). A couple of years later I learned what podcasting was, and it seemed like a great way to continue doing the same kind of thing on our own terms, and reach a much larger audience. Our friend Doug was doing a podcast with John Campea from The Movie Blog, and they had me on as a guest one week, and after that I was hooked."

Greg Gaspari was a radio DJ for his local canadian radio station where he went by "The Gasman". He later went on to manage HMV, a DVD and record store, where he met Jay Cheel. "Jay asked me to be a part of the podcast, the first time I met Sean was the first time I was on the podcast." says Gaspari.

Jay Cheel is one of the most talented filmmakers out there today, but the sad thing is most people probably haven't heard of him. "In High School I was originally planning on pursuing animation or illustration." Cheel says. "It was after recieving a video camera as a gift that I decided I wanted to go to film school." Jay has made many short films for Film Junk and co-hosts the Film Junk Podcast with Sean and Greg Gaspari, he also runs his own movie website The Documentary Blog. "I started The Documentary Blog after I graduated from film school." said Cheel. "I found that Film Junk wasn't always the appropriate output for some of the films I was getting in to, so I decided to start my own site." Jay recently finished the short documentary The Goblin Man of Norway. The film centers on the Goblin Man, it was originally intended as viral marketing for the video game Too Human, which he worked on at Silicon Knights in St. Catharines, Ontario. The film started to evolve into a lot more than it was originally planned and recently played at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival in October. Cheel was hesitant to reveal to much information about Goblin Man in my interview with him because of a highly secretive marketing campaign going with it right now. Jay is currently working on a new short film Colore non Vedenti which he explains as "A movie about a guy struggling to get through a crucial second date while slowly realizing he's caught up in the middle of a 'Body Snatchers' style alien invasion. It's a tribute to films like The Stuff, Invaders From Mars and Invasion of the Body Snatchers." After Jay is finished with the film, he plans to submit it to some film festivals along with providing it free online.

I highly recommend visiting Film Junk. In my humble opinion it is not only the best Movie Site out there, but one of the most well run and entertaining websites in general. Sean even has great plans for the future of the site. "Next year I hope to apply to become a member of the Online Film Critics Society, so that my reviews can get published on Rotten Tomatoes and become more widely read. I'm also hoping we can attend a few more film festivals over the next year, and continue to find ways to expand our audience without compromising the personal feel of the site." So what are doing just sitting there? Visit filmjunk.com right now! I don't think you'll be dissapointed.

Welcome!

Welcome to my blog! So if you like what I do, check in every once in a while, and enjoy!
